Have you wondered about the name and function of the gap that exists between the teeth? It is called DIASTEMA. This is a gap that is found in-between the teeth of some human beings. While this gap is now regarded as a valuable asset of beauty and admiration, it is having its biological importance. People have directed their attention to the beauty it amplifies especially when it is between the beautiful white teeth of an elegant lady.

It is important to note that, these gaps are not only found in humans. It is a common biological feature in herbivorous animals such as goats, sheep, cows etc. It places a very important role in feeding. On the other hand, this feature has no apparent function in humans. The presence of diastema in humans is of no general biological importance. This does not relegate its importance to the individuals who possess it. Let's learn more about this biological phenomenon.

WHAT IS DIASTEMA

Diastema is a condition where there is a noticeable space or gap between the teeth. This gap can occur in between any of the teeth but it is very visible when it is located in the frontal view of the buccal cavity. The gap occurs in both children and adults. In children, the gap may be closed during the change of teeth from milk to permanent teeth.

The size of the diastema varies greatly from person to person. It may be very small and not noticeable in some cases. On the other hand, it can so so large to the extent that one full tooth can fit into the gaps created.

CAUSES OF DIASTEMA IN HUMANS

Since this phenomenon is not part of the natural outlook of humans several conditions might single-handedly or combine to bring about its effect on humans. Some of the causes include;

1. MISSING TEETH. This is a situation in which the death fails to develop or is underdeveloped. The teeth may develop from the jaw home but fail to erupt externally. In both situations, it lives gaps between two well-developed teeth.

2. NATURAL TOOTH GROWTH. This occurs mostly in kids between 6 to 9 years. When kids start to develop their milk teeth, they sometimes get diastema in between some of their teeth. In most cases, these gaps get lost during the development of permanent teeth in their adult stages.

3. PERIODONTITIS. This is an infection that damages the enamel and the bones into which the teeth are fixed. When this condition is not treated in the early stages it may lead to the loss of teeth hence creating a gap between the teeth due to teeth loss.

4. BAD DENTAL HABIT. Inappropriate use of teeth also leads to the loss of teeth in most cases. The use of the teeth to open bottle tops and crack bones and other hard substances may lead to the weakening of teeth and the eventual loss of the teeth. Mimicking the thumbs and fingernails in the mouth can lead to the development of diastema in between the teeth.

5. ABNORMAL POSITION, SIZE AND SHAPE OF TEETH. Diastema can also find its way in between the teeth if teeth do not have the required size either oversize or underside, factor. One of the most important points is the position of teeth in the mouth. Some people have two or more teeth growth at the same point instead of growing side by side with each other

SYMPTOMS OF DIASTEMA

The obvious sign is the presence of gaps in-between the teeth. Also, other signs reveal this condition at the early stages. They are swollen and tender gum, bleeding gum, spitting blood when brushing etc

TREATMENT OF DIASTEMA

Most people don't have any negative health implications from diastema. People are beginning to valve these gaps and make it more of a fashion than a malfunction. In cases where this condition is treated for healthy living, several treatment measures are employed.

1. Naturally, this gap may close up by itself in children during their transition stage to adulthood. Analysis has revealed that this gap may close by about two millimetres naturally hence solving diastema conditions in children.

2. However, in adults, if the gap is a result of a gum infection your dentist may have to treat the infection of the gum first before trying to correct the gap. In Sevier cases antibiotics, scaling or root planing may be the necessary methods to achieve the desired result.

CONCLUSIONS

Diastema is a condition in humans where there are gaps in between the teeth of an individual. This condition is not only found in humans but also in grass-eating animals too. This gap I may say is a disorder in humans that results from the improper arrangement of teeth in the mouth of an individual. The ranges from very small ( negligible) to as large of the space for one tooth.

While this may be harmless in most situations, it has serious heat compile nation in some individuals. Diastema in some people is accompanied by pain and agony. It is advisable to see a professional dentist in case of any pain or discomfort in your teeth and mouth at large. Also, it is very important to keep very good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice every day. Avoid using your teeth to open hard bottles and crash heard objects. We should also endeavour to eat foods rich in calcium and vitamin D since they help build strong bones and teeth.
