This may sound like a scenario from a spy film, but it isn't in this case.
This eventuality is not that far-fetched thanks to artificial intelligence. The introduction of AI has resulted in many improvements in fields such as economics, social welfare, health, finance, and other aspects of human daily life.
What is AI?
"Artificial intelligence (AI) is a broad discipline of computer science concerned with creating intelligent machines that can accomplish activities that would normally need human intelligence."
Apple's Siri and Google's Alexa, self-driving cars, and other intelligible machines are a few of the technologies that are on the horizon. Automated financial transactions, auto piloting as seen in the aviation industry, and much more are products of AI. With AI, certain human activities which need so much accuracy and precision would be dealt with easily. Financial transactions, human surgeries and piloting would all be taken care of by AI.
History of AI
Before we delve more into the Highs and lows of the AI, let’s take a look at how it really came into existence. The concept of AI started with just a simple but history defining question, “can machines think?” The roots of modern Artificial Intelligence, or AI, can be traced back to the classical philosophers of Greece, and their efforts to model human thinking as a system of symbols. The conscious effort by scientists over the years to incorporate human abilities and emotions into machines to make them more relatable to led to the discovery of AI.
AI has already shown a lot of significance in our modern lives.
Transport, health, banking, communication, education is just a mention of sectors AI has greatly impacted on.
AI in Transport
In the transport sector, cars which can drive themselves to any location have been invented, which has taken care of human errors in driving. vivid examples are the Tesla automated vehicles. Autopiloting has also been around for some time now and is even being improved. Even though it may take quite a while to be perfected, AI is gradually taking over the transport sector.
AI in Finance
In Banking and Finance, the introduction of "cryptobots" in the transaction of cryptocurrency has greatly improved transaction rates as well as the ease of making huge transactions. The relative ease of transactions has boomed the online market.
AI in Healthcare
AI has also greatly contributed to the healthcare system.
AI programs are being used in areas such as diagnosis, treatment protocol development, drug development, personalized medicine, and patient monitoring and care.
Medical costs are expected to drop as a result of AI's increased accuracy in diagnosis, better treatment plan forecasts, and illness prevention.
Other potential applications of AI include Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), which are expected to aid persons who have difficulty moving, speaking, or recovering from a spinal cord damage. By deciphering brain activation, the BCIs will employ AI to assist these patients in moving and communicating. Medical imaging, automated clinical decision-making, diagnosis, prognosis, and other fields of healthcare have benefited greatly from artificial intelligence. Although AI has the potential to transform various disciplines of medicine, it is still limited and cannot fully replace a bedside physician.
Healthcare is a complex science with legal, ethical, regulatory, economic, and social constraints. To properly adopt AI in healthcare, various stakeholders, including citizens and society, must undergo parallel changes in the global setting. This is necessary to ensure that AI is under controlled use and human health is not compromised.
AI in Education
Virtual teachers, as well as virtual classrooms are now common, where AI tutors teach various courses and programs and offer certificates online without the stress of going to class physically. Even though it has its own hitches, you cannot take away the important role it has played in making teaching and learning easy and highly accessible. with the click of a button, an AI is ready to take you through a full course.
AI and its limitations
So many benefits, yet so much responsibility on us to ensure its use remains beneficial to humans, because as powerful as AI is, it is equally, if not more, destructive.
AI has a promising future, but not without its challenges. The immense benefits of AI have been countered with immense dangers as well. In as much as AI is a highly complex structure of algorithms, it is still just a computerized system hence easily susceptible to hackers who may take advantage of this and perform highly malicious acts with such kind of utility at their command, in which case, the system which was supposed to be a relief becomes a weapon and a burden on society.
Imagine a scenario where all transactions were automated, there would be no need for bankers and accountants, rendering people jobless. To make things worse, imagine all our transactions were hacked, that would be a disaster which could plunge the world into chaos.
Rules and standards hence need to be initiated and enforced for AI to be judiciously used and safely managed. The Artificial Risk and Governance policy is aimed at achieving just that. AI poses various risks relating to diverse fields. Data related risks and cyberattacks are all potential dangers, and if serious restrictions are not put in place, AI could become our future downfall.
The future of AI
In as much as AI is taking over, would it be a safe move to allow AI take control of our civilization? would it be suicidal? Even with all the regulations put in place, would it stop AI from going berserk one day and putting all our lives at risk? is the future bleak or bright? These are questions we should think about before attempting this venture of making AI autonomous and in control of almost all our activities.
Despite these ominous prospects, there is reason to be optimistic about AI's and humanity's futures. To boost productivity, AI can be integrated into human jobs. In terms of people, artificial intelligence, despite its flaws, has a bright future. These difficulties will be addressed over time, and AI will reach the stated aim of improving human existence by working hand in hand with humans.
