Love is when you put your partner's needs before yours. Many believe that we fall in love but is the heart the main organ that fuels this sentiment? No!
Falling in love, they say, is the most beautiful thing in the world but a few others think otherwise. I hope for both our sakes that it’s the former. Love means to be deeply committed and connected to someone or something. Love is when you put your partner's needs before yours. Hence, if two people are in love, they satisfy the needs of each other and if needs are met, happiness is attained. It makes people do "unreasonable" things for their partners and they seem not let go. The euphoria of falling in love is absolutely magical. But is it exclusively magical? The mechanism of falling in love is a mystery to some. Many believe that we fall in love with the heart but is the heart the main organ that fuels this sentiment? No! As inconsistent as it may seem, it is the brain that makes you fall in love.
Unbelievable, right? Should we say it’s biological, then? Let's explore.
The brain is the primary organ that controls and coordinates actions and reactions in the whole body. The brain secretes chemicals and hormones that assemble all the other organs and senses into action.
All the five senses come into play during the process of love but the first and foremost are the eyes. The brain controls the eyes and eye movement. Whenever a person sees another individual who is pleasant to the eyes, our brain immediately thinks about reproduction. It processes such individual as fit for reproduction. Survival is one of the greatest challenges amongst humans. Humans want individuals who are healthy and strong to carry their genes to the next generation. Thus, it is not surprising if ladies prefer thick and tall men. It is pleasant to their eyes but the brain informs them that such an individual is fit for reproduction.
After the eyes spots and admire an individual, it drives you to move closer and speak to your admirer. The nose and ears also act. This is a critical and important stage. If a person looks attractive but as one gets closer, he realizes that such individual has bad odor or a ridiculous voice, he immediately shuns away. The nose is able to smell pheromones. These are special natural chemicals that every individual possess. Mostly, females prefer their partners to have different pheromones compared to theirs as the famous saying goes "Unlike poles attract, like poles repel". This may be due to the fact that variability increases the chance of survival and fitness.
The touch and taste senses are usually the last during the process of love. Obviously, whenever we see individuals hold hands as they stroll, we tag them as lovebirds or best friends. Many a time, that is true but what truly happens is the increased secretion of dopamine and oxytocin. In females, there is an increase of oxytocin and vasopressin in males. The increased secretion controlled by the pituitary glands of the brain encourages the feeling of warmth, happiness and pleasure. When individuals share a first kiss, the brain secretes norepinephrine and cortisol. This makes you nervous, making your heart beat faster and sends a rush of blood all over your body. These hormones particularly the dopamine and oxytocin increases with time as the couple communicate often and utilize all the sense organs.
People usually say, ladies fall in love quickly. That may be true because dopamine and oxytocin increases exponentially. Also, serotonin level rise. This swell in serotonin makes the females more obsessed with the guy as her mood is lifted around the guy. A drop in serotonin may lead to depression. Furthermore, the level of testosterone which is scanty in females increases. It makes them aggressive and acts irrational or crazy at certain times.
This is because, oxytocin, the love or bonding hormone skyrockets whenever a woman has a sexual intercourse with a man. This simply means, the lady becomes attached to the man and finds it difficult to let go, which is different from males.
That is why, sex is recommended only for married couples.
Dopamine as we mentioned already increases when a man is having a good time. It could be during a football match, eating his favorite food or hanging out with his friends. Dopamine also increases when a man begins dating and going on lovely outings. However, that does not mean he has fallen in love since dopamine can increase even when he's watching a football game. The high amount of testosterone in males blocks the effects of oxytocin, the love hormone.
Does this mean men cannot fall in love? That is false.
Unlike females, men have a hormone similar to oxytocin called vasopressin. Vasopressin behaves similarly to oxytocin. It increases as one begins to interact further with a particular female. During this period, a man loves to impress the lady. He buys her gifts, gives her money and makes her feel loved.
Once again, we ask, does this mean a man has fallen in love? The answer is not yet.
This is because vasopressin increases significantly when a man finds a woman sexually attractive. Vasopressin drops immediately a guy has a sexual intercourse with the female. This explains why most guys can easily leave a woman after deriving sex from her. However, vasopressin will rise to become stable if the man continues to interact with the woman.
For a man to fall in love, he must be committed to the lady alone. This means that, he has no back ups whatsoever. Testosterone has been associated with the level of commitment. Single guys usually have relatively high testosterone and are actively seeking females. However, the level of testosterone begins to drop when a guy stops exploring and decides to stick with one individual.
It can be deduced that, when testosterone level drops, it reduces the level of inhibition on oxytocin, the bonding hormone eventually leading to an increased affection towards one person. It is at this stage that we affirm that a guy has fallen in love. So ladies, do not rush to offer sex to a man because that will not automatically make him committed to you. Be wise and make good decisions
So yes! The brain is not completely responsible for love even though it controls other parts of the body. The heart responds to the commands and reacts – when the brain releases the chemicals, the heart beats faster, pumping blood all over the body and distributing the signal across.
